StarSkate
STAR (STAR 1-5) is a figure skating program suited for skaters that have successfully completed Junior Academy, Intro to Figure Skating or CanSkate Stage 6 and want to take the next step. Skaters entering Junior STAR build on skills acquired in CanSkate Stage 6, further developing and refining fundamental figure skating skills. The goal of this program is to train skaters for successful completion of the STAR 1-5 assessments in:
- Skills: edges, turns, power and field moves;
- Freeskate: jump and spin technique as well as the introduction of programs to music; and
- Ice Dance: dance steps and technique, pattern dances, timing and carriage.
- Synchronized Skating: elements performed by a group of skaters that will include timing, power, balance, control, and spatial orientation.
The StarSkate program is based on the principles of the Learn to Train stage of development described in Skate Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model. Skaters are encouraged to acquire a skill set that will allow them to reach the highest level of proficiency that their unique talent and commitment will allow. The importance of coaching and strong technical development is critical at this stage.
Skaters entering this program (STAR 1) should participate in two (2) on-ice sessions and one (1) off-ice session per week. By the end of this program (STAR 5), skaters should participate in four (4) on-ice sessions and two (2) off-ice sessions per week.
